Letter from the MTC

Dear Family,

Your son will be departing the England Missionary Training Centre on Wednesday morning, 2nd September.  We want you to know how much we have enjoyed having him with us.

Elder Warburton is a fine young man and we are grateful for the opportunity we have had to work with him on a daily basis.  He is well-prepared for his mission and he continues each day to grow spiritually.  He is developing good teaching skills and is excited about the work.  He is ready for full time service in the England London Mission.

We love this young man and are grateful to you for all you have done to prepare him for this wonderful time in his life.  Your love and continued support are important to his success.   Letters are always greatly anticipated and appreciated.

May you and your family be blessed as he continues to serve our Heavenly Father.

Sincerely,

Hi Everyone!

Jared didn't really write a letter this week...he just answered our letters.  So...here's what he has to say about what's going on in a non-formal letter sort of way:

To Mom:

I'll start off by saying that I appreciate the pictures.

But I can't see them. oh well.

We start the day with the most filling breakfasts ever, then we go to our classroom to study. after that we do TRCs. then we do other stuff, then lunch. After that more classes then dinner, then classes, then snack, then bed. It's fun.

We attend church in the MTC. There are only 52 missionaries here. I love my district. they're really silly.
The temple is about a 2 minute walk away. We did endowments today. It was great.

The food here is wonderful. I've eaten more here than I have eaten in the past year. You get unlimited refills.
We exercise in two groups of 26. We either play football (soccer) or ultimate frisbee.

Well, I answered all of the questions I was asked so I'll finish up here. I have a few pictures to share, but I can't send them yet, so I'll send them later.

Bye!

P.S. I love you all!

To Dad:

I love brother McBride! He was the sub for Brother Larson when he couldn't be there.

My companion is Elder Andrews. He LOVES airsoft and he wants to be a U.S. marshal when he's older.

We have 6 missionaries in our room. Elder Andrews, Elder Pitbladdo (he lived near where Chris served), Elder Barrett (he's Scottish), Elder Wilson (He also loves airsoft, but most importantly, he's the "district scholar". He knows all the scriptures we ask him about), and Elder Baum (he's from Utah).

For the day routine, refer to Mom's letter.

Okay, I'm about to leave to go to the store. Bye!

To Chris:

Sooo, yeah, there's about 52 missionaries here. The entire MTC is a three story hotel remodeled to fit the needs of the missionaries. it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the Provo MTC because there is a little team of chefs to cook for us and the classes are tiny and personal. Also the temple is a good 2 minute walk from the MTC building.

(A paragraph about Magic the Gathering cards...I didn't have anyone to translate for me so I took it out. :))

The weather hasn't been that bad. It's only rained once. It started when I got here and it hasn't stopped. Just kidding, but it has rained a lot. The best thing about the weather is that it's constantly 19 degree's Celsius here, whatever that means. It's always cold out and it's nice. Okay, I don't know what else to write so I'm going to get to emailing others. Bye!

To Kinsey:

So far, I really love the MTC. There are only 52 missionaries here so it's pretty nice. I really enjoy the classes. My companion is great. We're basically the best, closest, happiest, most loving district ever. The teachers are amazing and the people are so British. I love it.

Make sure to include me in your weekly emails.

Love you!
Cheers!

He Got There Safe!!

Hi, Mom!

So it feels like 5:00 in the morning, but it's 11:00 here. ugh.
So far it has been great. I love all the missionaries I've met so far. They're really fun.
I haven't slept for about 24 hours. Just the way I like it. ;) When I got to the airport in Newark, I thought that there would be about 5, maybe six missionaries meeting up. But there was about 22 missionaries. It was fun.
I'm only supposed to write a short letter, so I'm going to go now. Bye!

Love, Elder Warlurton,
I mean, whilkinson,
or Roberson,
Warburton?

P.S. These are what people here through my american accent.

Hi Dad,

I'll sleep very well this afternoon. because that's what it's going to feel like. :)
I've been here for about 45 minutes, and it's been great so far. It's so surreal to actually be here. Everybody talks like English people and it's great. I really think I'm going to pick up on it really quick.

I've got to go, so I'll update you more when I get more time to type. Bye!

Love,
Elder Warburton

Saying Goodbye

We all headed to the airport to say goodbye to Elder Warburton.  There are a few things you need to know about this trip:

  • Jared doesn't like to hug.
  • Carson did not want his picture taken or to be hugged.
  • We might just be the most awkward family on the planet.
This was the start of Carson refusing to get his picture taken.
Right before Gary took this picture, he announced that he was going to take a stealth picture....meaning that he was trying to be sneaky so that Carson didn't realize that he was getting his picture taken.  Emily and I are laughing that Gary LOUDLY announced that he was being stealthy.  It worked though because Carson is in the picture!!
One of the only ones with a real smile from Jared!
Last minute advice from Dad...you can tell by Jared's glazed over look.
More advice...still glazed...a thumbs up from Chris.
The moment I realized that he forgot to shave.
Notice he is not hugging her.
Oh....she got a little pat on the back!
Chris sort of got a hug.
No hug for Dad.
The secret to getting a hug from Jared is to not let go.
Carson DOES NOT want a hug!!
Still no hugging!
A fake out...pretends he's giving a hug and then smacks him on the rear.
They're friends again.
One arm hug for Mom.
I just held on until I got a real hug.
And....he's off.
As we were leaving the airport, they announced on the intercom that someone had forgotten their lunch at security.  I heard it and thought "Oh good...he doesn't have a lunch to lose."  Then halfway home, the thought hit me that he had a 3 month supply of insulin in that green lunchbox that he was carrying and so for the next several hours, I worried that he had forgotten it.  Luckily, I worried for nothing.  He AND his insulin made it all the way to England.

Phew!!

Being Set Apart

The Blessing (this is not word for word but just what I could remember from the notes I took):

Elder Jared Michael Warburton by the authority of the Melchizedek priesthood and through the keys given by President Thomas S. Monson, I lay my hands upon your head and set you apart as a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called to serve in the England London mission.

Heavenly Father knows you and is grateful for your preparation, worthiness and willingness to serve a mission and share your life with your brothers and sisters in London.  He is grateful for your obedience and dedication to Him.

I bless you to know that Heavenly Father will guide and direct you as you listen to the Holy Ghost.  You will be guided and directed as you strive to be obedient and through your worthiness.  He will be your constant companion and will lead, guide and direct everything you stand in need of including where you need to be, when you need to be there and will even give you the words to speak.

I bless you to have the wisdom to make good choices and to know that Heavenly Father is grateful for the choices you have already made.

I bless you that your body will endure well with strength and energy to fulfill your duties as you strive to manage your health.  As you eat healthy and exercise, your body will be able to withstand the rigors of mission life.

I bless you with the desire to work hard and serve well.

I bless you in your relationships with your family, your companions and the people you meet that they will be able to see you as a son of God who is faithful, true and dedicated and the people you meet will strive to be like you.

Be an example.  Be responsible.  Be a leader among leaders and investigators.

The Lord loves you and will bless you.  I bless you with an open mind and heart to know the scriptures.  I bless you as you study, you will receive revelation and insights and will be able to witness to many and witness many miracles in the lives of the people you meet.

I bless you to know that your experiences will be a great blessing to your family and friends as they experience the mission with you and their faith will grow and increase because of your example.

I bless you with these and all other blessings in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Farewell Talk

Hello everyone. For those who don’t know me, I’m Jared Warburton, and I will be leaving on my mission to England this upcoming Wednesday. I would just like to start off by saying that I’m very excited to go and teach the people there. All of you young men out there better try your hardest to go on a mission. I don’t know what it’s going to be like, but I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. I know that it changes people, both the missionaries and the investigators. I know this because of the stories I have heard about my dad.

My dad was a convert to the church. After praying for direction in his life, he was told, by what he later realized to be the Holy Ghost, to join a church. The day after he prayed, the Elders came to his door and asked if he would like to learn more about Jesus Christ and he did because he wanted to do what the Lord directed him to do.  I’m grateful for those two Elders that taught my dad. I have been blessed by the father that he became through growing and learning about the gospel and living an obedient life.

So, I was asked to give a talk today on fatherhood. And this isn’t just a talk for fathers. All of you young men out there better listen up, because I hope that you will all become good fathers one day. And all of you women and young women out there, this is a great resource to hold your husbands and fathers to, but, don’t be too harsh with them. Nobody is perfect.

There are a few characteristics that good fathers have in common. A good father is patient, wise, kind, and loving. They help their family when they are in need and they give comfort to those who need it. But the most important role of the father is to be a teacher.

I have a good friend named Sean. During the school year he would host little study parties for some of his friends. I would have never wanted to do this. I believe that the words study and party should never be next to each other in the same sentence. But I still enjoyed them and I know that Sean enjoyed these because of the example of his father. His dad was extremely big on education and it definitely rubbed off on him. I’m sure that his example is the reason why he got into the college that he wanted to get into.

Fathers are to command their children and their household “that they should keep the way of the lord.” This doesn’t mean that the father is the supreme ruler of the home. He is to only command the household to live the way of the lord in righteousness and love. The best way to do this is through example.

One thing that I have been told by others is that the kids in my family are great at accepting others the way they are. I don’t really notice this myself, but I bet that it’s because of the example of my dad. One of his winning characteristics is that he never speaks badly about anyone. He sees the good in others and I guess that’s where it came from. He taught us, through example, that we should all love others as Christ loves others.

Children learn through example. In the book of John, it says, “Verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.” (John 5:19) Almost nothing teaches a child better than the example of a loving father.

One wonderful example of a good father is that of Lehi. Nephi says, in verse one of chapter one of first Nephi, “I Nephi having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father,” When Lehi was commanded to leave Jerusalem, he quietly obeyed and did as heavenly father asked of him. Nephi did the same without questioning his father because he had been taught by example to follow the lord. Lehi was being an example to Nephi by trusting in the lord and following his commandments.

Ezra Taft Benson did a wonderful job of explaining the roles of a father.

A fathers calling is eternal. Men have been called to be fathers since the beginning of time. When Adam first came to the earth, god commanded him to multiply and replenish the earth. Thus, he had become the father of humankind. God, the creator of heaven and earth, life, and everything, has us address him as heavenly father. This must illustrate how important the calling of father is.

Ezra Taft Benson stated:

“For a man, there is no calling as high as that of a righteous patriarch, married in the house of the lord, presiding over his children.”

Let’s go over these in detail.

The father is the patriarch: a patriarch is to provide for that which he has authority over. In a father’s case, they are to provide spiritual advice to their children. They are also to provide for their physical needs as well.

L. Tom Perry gave a good example in his talk Fatherhood, an eternal calling. He said:

“One good example of a patriarch is Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, observing how he was governing the children of Israel:

“And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? Why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

“And Moses said unto his father in law, because the people come unto me to enquire of God: …

“And Moses’ father in law said unto him, the thing that thou doest is not good.

“Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.”

Then Jethro taught Moses how to delegate this responsibility by calling able men who would fear God and letting them judge as rulers in Israel:

“And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.”

Jethro was the perfect example of a father. He noticed that Moses had a problem, which I don’t believe Moses even noticed, and he actively tried to help him through that problem. He led Moses through it and solved it with him. And on top of that, he taught him a few lessons in the process.

The father is married in the house of the lord: I believe we can take this not only literally, but metaphorically as well. Of course, the father should be married in the temple, but they should also treat their marriage as something sacred, they should make their house a house of the lord.

Lastly, a father presides over his children: a father presides over his children by being an example, by spending time with them, by listening to them. Ezra Taft Benson gives ten examples of how to be a good example to your children.

1. Give father’s blessings to your children. Baptize and confirm your children. Ordain your sons to the priesthood. These will become spiritual highlights in the lives of your children.

2. Personally direct family prayers, daily scripture reading, and weekly family home evenings. Your personal involvement will show your children how important these activities really are.

3. Whenever possible, attend Church meetings together as a family. Family worship under your leadership is vital to your children’s spiritual welfare.

4. Go on outings with your family.

5. Build traditions of family vacations and trips and outings. These memories will never be forgotten by your children.

6. Have regular one-on-one visits with your children. Let them talk about what they would like to. Teach them gospel principles. Teach them true values. Tell them you love them. Personal time with your children tells them where Dad puts his priorities.

7. Teach your children to work, and show them the value of working toward a worthy goal. …

8. Encourage good music and art and literature in your homes. Homes that have a spirit of refinement and beauty will bless the lives of your children forever.

9. As distances allow, regularly attend the temple with your wife. Your children will then better understand the importance of temple marriage and temple vows and the eternal family unit.

10. Have your children see your joy and satisfaction in service to the Church. This can become contagious to them, so they, too, will want to serve in the Church and will love the kingdom.

Being a father is a sacred duty. If something would get in the way of your fatherly duties, try to avoid those things as much as possible. I’m not saying that you have to give up all of your personal hobbies. I’m just saying that if an opportunity arises in which you can enrich the life of one of your family members, don’t pass it up for something of less importance to your eternal relationship.

I would like to bear my testimony. I believe that the gift of fatherhood is ordained of god. I know that it is one of the most important goals for young men to strive for. Young men, stay worthy to become a father, to be able to get married in the temple, to be able to lead your future family in righteousness, to be able to help more children of our Heavenly Father learn of the gospel, of repentance, of the love that he feels for us. Sisters, help your husbands, brothers, fathers and all men of the church. Help them stay worthy, help them learn and grow. Fathers, keep fatherhood sacred and remember that it is one of the most important things you will ever do. I say these things In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
